Termite Control in NYC
Termite inspection and treatment for houses, apartment buildings and businesses in all five boroughs.
Termite Control for NYC Homes and Buildings
NYC Extermination finds and treats termites in New York City houses, apartment buildings and businesses. Our termite control starts with a free on-site inspection to confirm it’s termites, find where they’re active and see how far the damage goes. Then we treat those areas and the routes termites use to get in, and check back to make sure the activity has stopped.
Most termites in New York are eastern subterranean termites. They live in the soil, travel up through mud tubes and eat wood from the inside, so the damage can go unnoticed for years. Older buildings with wood framing, damp basements, crawl spaces and wood touching the soil are most at risk.
Often the first thing people see is a spring swarm: winged termites near windows and doors, then piles of shed wings. Not sure if it’s termites or flying ants? Our guide to termites vs. ants shows the difference.
Signs You Need a Termite Inspection
Termites stay hidden, so the signs usually show up before the termites do. Look for:
- Mud tubes, pencil-wide tunnels of soil on foundation walls, basement walls or wood.
- Hollow-sounding wood that feels soft or crumbles when you press it.
- Discarded wings near windows, doors and light fixtures, often after a spring swarm.
- Winged termites indoors, most often in spring.
- Damaged wood with tunnels along the grain, or paint that bubbles or cracks.
If you see any of these, call for an inspection. Our guide to common signs of termite damage explains each one.
How We Get Rid of Termites
Termite work is careful work. Here’s how a job runs, from the first visit to the follow-up:
Step 1: Inspection
We inspect the foundation, basement, crawl spaces, framing and any wood near the soil to find termite activity, how they get in and the damage so far. The inspection and the estimate are free.
Step 2: Identification
We confirm it’s termites and not ants or another wood pest, and find what’s drawing them in, like moisture, leaks or wood touching the soil.
Step 3: A Plan for Your Property
Based on what we find, we put together a treatment plan for your property and go over it with you, including the cost, before any work starts.
Step 4: Treatment
We treat the areas where termites are active and the routes they use to reach the building, with EPA-registered products chosen for your property.
Step 5: Prevention
We point out what to fix so termites don’t come back: wood touching the soil, leaks, damp areas and gaps in the foundation. Our guide to termite prevention covers the details.
Step 6: Follow-Up
We check back after treatment to make sure the activity has stopped. Buildings that need ongoing checks can get regular service.
Termite Control for Apartment Buildings and Businesses
In a building, termites are a structural problem, not just a pest problem. For apartment buildings, co-ops, offices, stores and warehouses, we inspect basements, crawl spaces, boiler rooms and any wood near the foundation, treat where termites are active and set follow-up checks that fit the building.
Landlords and property managers can see how we handle pest control for apartment buildings, and businesses can learn more about our commercial pest control.
Termite Control for Houses and Homes
In houses, termites usually start where wood meets soil: porches, decks, sill plates and basement framing. We find where they’re active, treat those areas and the routes they use, and tell you what to change, like firewood stacked against the house or mulch piled at the foundation, to keep them away.
Before any treatment we ask about children, pets, health and allergy concerns and plan around them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does termite control include?
A free on-site inspection, a treatment plan for your property, treatment of the areas where termites are active and the routes they use, advice on what draws them in, and follow-up checks.
Is it termites or flying ants?
Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist and four wings of the same length. Flying ants have bent antennae, a pinched waist and front wings longer than the back ones. Our guide to termites vs. ants has more detail.
Is termite treatment safe for children and pets?
We ask about children, pets, health and allergy concerns before we treat and plan around them. We use EPA-registered products, apply them only where termites are active, and tell you about any areas to keep clear and for how long.
How much does termite treatment cost in NYC?
It depends on the size of the property, how far the termites have spread, the damage and the treatment your building needs. The on-site inspection and the estimate are free.
How long does termite treatment last?
It depends on the treatment and on whether the conditions that drew termites in get fixed. Our guide on how long termite treatment lasts goes into more detail, and follow-up checks catch any new activity early.
How often should a building be checked for termites?
Once a year is a good rule, and more often for buildings with past termite activity, damp basements or wood near the soil. Regular checks catch termites before they cause structural damage.
